MOTÖRHEAD's LEMMY: 'I Don't Know Who Started The Rumor I Hated The Press'

November 11, 2007

Nathan Bevan of Icwales.icnetwork.co.uk reports: “The trick about interviewing Lemmy," a friend warned me, “is to get him after he's recovered from last night's hangover and just before he starts working on tomorrow's.”

Apparently, the notoriously hard-boozing MOTÖRHEAD singer hates interviews.

Just ask the traumatized French TV reporter in the mid-1980s clip, currently doing the rounds on YouTube, who made the mistake of asking him: "Why eez your music so violent?”

"Violent? What do you mean violent!?" barked the warty-faced metal god, before promptly smashing up his hotel room, stopping only to wink at the cameras while holding a knife to the quaking journo's throat.

So it's not without a hint of trepidation that I make the late night trans-Atlantic phone call to the self-confessed 'heaviest drinking, most oversexed speedfreak in the music business' at his two-room Hollywood pad.

"I don't know who started the rumor I hated the press, I've done more interviews than you've had f**king hot dinners," croaks 61-year-old Lemmy who, despite naming his band after their colossal capacity for necking amphetamines, sounds absolutely knackered.

"Besides, nobody in the world could possibly be as mean as I look, could they?"
